Established in 1979, the same year as I was born, Galago is Swedens main alternative comics magazine and publisher. I grew up reading Galago in the 80s and 90s and life really came full circle for me when published my first Buffalo Bill gates book with them in 2015. Since I already had the spirit of Galago irreversibly ingrained in my DNA I eventually started designing other things for them, including a complete redesign of the magazine in 2016 and another one in 2020. I still design every issue together with Josefine Edenvik. So far I've ended up being a writer, cashier, IT-technician, video producer, comic artist, graphic comedian, journalist, editor, roadie and bodyguard for Galago.
For the design of Galago I always come back to the idea that drawing comics is one of the most direct artforms there are. A long as you have something you want to tell others about you can sit down and have a rudimentary comic done in a very short time without any prior skills. You don't need to learn guitar chords or have the attention spam needed to write a book. You can sit done and scribble down a comic almost without any previous knowledge. I'm pretty obsessed with skill and quality but this energy of MAKING is something I love even more.
This directness was something I felt Galago needed in its design. The energy need to be in there. We made a setup where we could cut and paste elements in a decorative and wild way, to make it feel like it is always moving and the version you see now is just the present versions, it will move again and the next issue will be another snapshot of the evolving beast that is Galago.
