Here it is, the definitive book about the Swedish alternative comics revolution in the 80s and 90s, as lived by Rolf Classon, the legendary force of nature and powerhouse publisher. Started in 1979, Galago is the worlds oldest active alternative comics magazine. It is also the main Swedish alternative comics publisher, and was the centre of the Swedish fields boom in the 80s and 90s. The man at centre of that centre was Rolf Classon, and this book is about him, focusing on the 80s and 90s.
Design wise I followed the chaotic and spontaneous vibe of the magazine (and Rolf). There were so much great material in his archives, I used some of it in title page collages to create a loose and playful atmosphere.
For the layout I followed Rolfs style of talking: loooots of side stories and anecdotes. He goes all over the place and I thought it would be wrong to edit that out of the project. It’s not a dramaturgically perfect story, it's a chaotic life full of stories inside stories, like life itself . So I made a flexible system where we could lift side stories into the captions wherever they disrupted the main story. The captions were allowed to be very long, and it created interesting layouts which sometimes refer to a magazine format.
There is a lot to say about this book, but the main thing for me is that I feel like got to make a book about Nirvana, together with Kurt Cobain.
