Mats is probably Swedens most well establishd autobiographic comic novellist. In his mid 40s he discovered he is of samic descent and started looking into his heritage. In the process also uncovered the Swedish states crimes against the samic people, the natives of Sweden, and surrounding nordic countries. His personal story and the political story became a book, När Vi Var Samer.

From a design point of view, I though it was quite  insteresting that he wore a Sonic Youth t-shirt for the promotional photos. Especially since it was the cover of Goo, with the classic drawing by Raymond Pettibon. To me it spelled this riddle: Samic Culture + Raymond Pettibon = ?. I figured I would  straighten the question mark if I dug into the graphic treasure which is Samic symbols and pattern, and treated them like I think Pettibon would have. Rough, black and whit and playful.

That’s why the cover looks like it does, Mats choosing to wear a Goo shirt on the shoot, and me taking that as the starting point.
